Morgue Count Eclipses Other Tallies Since Shrine Attack

Grisly attacks and other sectarian violence unleashed by last week's bombing of a Shiite Muslim shrine have killed more than 1,300 Iraqis, making the past few days the deadliest of the war outside of major U.S. offensives, according to Baghdad's main morgue. The toll was more than three times higher than the figure previously reported by the U.S. military and the news media.

Hundreds of unclaimed dead lay at the morgue at midday Monday -- blood-caked men who had been shot, knifed, garroted or apparently suffocated by the plastic bags still over their heads. Many of the bodies were sprawled with their hands still bound -- and many of them had wound up at the morgue after what their families said was their abduction by the Mahdi Army, the Shiite militia of cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

"And they say there is no sectarian war?" demanded one man. "What do you call this?"

The population of Irag is about 25 to 30 million people, or about 1/10 the population of America. So, this 1,300 people killed is equavalent to the death of 13,000 Americans. Imagine if 13,000 Americans were killed in one week of violence. Mission Accomplished?

There will ALWAYS be excessive death in the Middle East. Islam, at its core, is fundamentally violent, and when separated into competing factions, its tendency toward terror is magnified. They cant not kill each other. You think they have any hesitancy whatsoever about exterminating you and America? There has NEVER been "peace" in the Middle East and there NEVER will be. But if what Mike says is true, then I assume he is for full and immediate military pull-out from Iraq and Afganistan. That way, we will be out of the way and the Iraqis and Afghans will be able to kill each other to their hearts content, right Mike? And, hell, by Mike's logic, we never should have invaded Iraq because Saddam was all about killing fellow Muslims, either Shiites, Kuwaitis, Iranians or just plain political opponents. Freepers say Saddam killed 100,000 iraqis a year. So, Mike, which is it? Was Bush a fool for invading Iraq and deposing that great "Muslim Slayer" Saddam, or is he a fool for not removing our troops and letting the Iraqis Afghans kill themselves?
