Cheney accidentally shoots and injures fellow quail hunter in Texas

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a companion during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, spraying the fellow hunter in the face and chest with shotgun pellets.

Harry Whittington, a millionaire lawyer from Austin, was in stable condition in the intensive care unit of a Corpus Christi hospital Sunday, according to Yvonne Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Christus Spohn Health System.

The incident occurred Saturday at a ranch in south Texas where the vice-president and two companions were hunting quail. It was not reported publicly by the vice-president's office for nearly 24 hours, and then only after the incident was reported locally by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

Katharine Armstrong, the ranch's owner, said Sunday that Cheney was using a 28-guage shotgun and that Whittington was about 25 metres away when he was hit in the cheek, neck and chest.

Each of the hunters were wearing bright orange vests at the time, Armstrong told reporters at the ranch about 100 kilometres southwest of Corpus Christi. She said Whittington was "alert and doing fine."

Joe Hunter ends up on the shit-end-of-the-Law stick, threatened with a manslaughter rap, harassed endlessly and so maligned in the media that Joe Hunter has to uproot and start a new life elsewhere.

Dick Cheney says "oops, sorry for blowing half your face off", and then flys back to Warshington to administer further senseless war death, and the management of all the cover ups, unhindered by any legal process.

Meanwhile (idiot) media label shooting "accidental" right out of the box, but would never give Joe Hunter the same decency.

Not even a hint that there could have been neglegence; impediment (drinking); or the exercise of stupid bravado.

The photo can be altered, but the stains of this one will be much harder to wash clean.

Somehow, the most interesting part of this story is being suppressed: the news of this shooting was kept secret for 24 hours after the event. WTF is up with that?

Oh.. and BTW, you don't "spray shotgun pellets" at someone. You SHOOT them into their body with explosive force. This story is being seriously played down. What do you want to bet that no pictures will EVER appear of the horrible injuries this poor guy suffered? Obviously he's a friend of Dick, (or he WAS a friend) so I bet he plays ball and hides out until he's healed.
