Bravo, Aravosis
Iran. What should the Dems say? John has the points:
- Iran is ten years away from developing nukes.
- Iran is a convenient way to change the subject.
- Bringing up Iran now is a convenient way to help Republicans in the fall congressional elections.
- George Bush is the wrong man to be launching yet another war.
- Slow down, we've got ten years.
- Since we have ten years, we can at the very least wait seven months until the congressional elections this fall.
- It is ridiculous to consider any congressional resolution on Iran until after the fall elections.
- There is no reason we need to even go to war until Bush has left office.
- Bush is the not the president we want exercising the nuclear option.
- Bush either lied to us, or was unable to determine the truth, about Iraq's WMD program.
- What military and what money are we going to use to launch a war against Iran?
- Why is it always us?
He then says:
Having explained all of that, I think the Democrats' message and policy needs to be distilled into one single point.
Not having the curse of a huge readership (and we're sick about it), we'll open up the comments to your suggestions where they won't get lost in a zillion others (sob) and we'll forward them to AmericaBlog.

I suggest something positive. How about, "Let's help President Bush not make another gigantic mistake - tell him to stay the fuck out of Iran."
Or....
"Let's not overwork Bush's rich friends - they're still trying to bail him out in Iraq."

"No rush to war, everybody just take a breath and chill out"
By the way...I am a regular reader of your blog, have been for years and always enjoy it. But as of approximately 3-4 months ago (huge guess here...cannot remember exactly when but for a while now) some change did something to how I read this site using Explorer.
Often text disappears to reappear later. Especially noticeable when I go into the comments area, I have to (MANY times sometimes) page up and down using the scroll bar, because though I can see the horizontal lines that demark comments, there is nothing in them except space, until I scroll it past the screen then carefully come back.
This happens both from my machine at work and home.
Can anyone else here describe this?

"Wrong war at the wrong time with the WRONG president."

switch to firefox, a much better tool. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
It is easy to import your bookmarks and stops popups.

"We understand the problem of Iran, but we have time to wait for the election of a competent President to handle it."
Posted by: Ryogam | Apr 13, 2006 at 04:21 AM
I think we should say "Iran is at least five to ten years away from having a nuke." If we say ten years, it makes us sound too optimistic. We need to ensure people that our estimate takes into account the possibility, however unlikely, that Iran could ramp-up production to get the nuke sooner. And five years still gets us safely into the hands of another administration.

1) "Do you trust *him* with another war?"
2) ...there is no 2.

I liked "Wrong War with the Wrong President" above - here's a variation:

Agreed on making the more conservative 5-year estimate. Israel has tagged it at about 3 years, so this middle ground makes more sense.
There is no need to rush into war at this time, especially in any uninlateral way. The failings of the Iraq venture has proven that a true multinational coalition of world powers is absolutely necessary for such a scenario. The United States should not be the world's police officer and judge. It is time for America to rejoin the world community of nations instead of continuing to stand alone. We will be much stronger as the leader of nations than as a lone state. We must rejoin the other powers and get back to the table and the truly hard work of negotiations and inspections.

8. There is no reason we need to even go to war until Bush has left office.
TRANSLATION: "After we get a Democrat in the White House, then we can go to war with Iran and it'll be a legal war cuz it was started by a Democrat.

Barry...thanks for the suggestion, on firefox, but even though it is A solution, I don't see it as THE solution because there are still millions of folks using Explorer. I thought this blog ought to know (and can do what they want about it, ignore, fix, whatever) about this since I am sure it affects way more than just me. There are probably lots of folks that don't say anything but don't visit as much as this site warrants because of it.
The solution is not to fix MY experience, but to fix so it at least loads okay in all major web browsers.

How about this: "Regime change begins at home".

Another point: when Congress authorized force in Afghanistan, this was taken by Bush as an authorization to do anything he pleased here or abroad. The Fourth Amendment went out the window. What on earth is going to happen if Bush gets another authorization??
Boiled down--"Don't give Bush a blank check!"

This is one of the lamer posts I've seen here in a while. Yes, the Democrats are clueless-- see "We can do better." No fucking shit. I don't need the queens at Americablog to tell me that. Let me know when they actually support real opposition to Bush (see the Alito filibuster or Cynthia McKinney) rather than rushing around Washington like giggling schoolgirls snapping photos with the likes Katherine Harris. But then, Queen John, by his own admission, is a Log Cabin Republican who became a DLC Democrat in the early 90's because of so-called "gay" issues. If the Republican Party came out in support of gay marriage today, you can bet that Queen John would go running right back there in a heartbeat, the rest of us be damned . . .

And that's the difference between a liberal and a conservative.
A conservative would have been happy with his problem being solved. The liberal wants the problem solved for everyone.

"There are consistant indications that the President and his administration have lied to us." and "The pattern of incompetence by the President and his administration goes back to 9-11."
Posted by: C.P.T.L. | Apr 13, 2006 at 09:33 AM
I saw this elsewhere -- "There's no excuse for voting Republican."
Apply that to Iran, and you get "There's no excuse for letting George Bush take us into another mistaken war."
... and I, too, consider "Won't Get Fooled Again" a good slogan. "No puede engañarnos!"
"The wrong man with the wrong plan to deal with Iran" has a certain lilt to it, too.
Then again, "You and what army?" hits home a little too closely.

How about...
"Bush might get lucky the third time!"
or
"Even a broken clock is right occasionally"
Sorry, good slogans shouldn't have to include sarcasm or snark tags.
"Iran/Iraq - Same S#!T, different day"
or
"Everything Bush touches turns to s#!t, why give him another war?"
There goes that profanity filter again.
