Tonight might be our last chance to get an unfettered message out about the corporate hijacking of the American economy.
That's the thought I had as I was coming out my sleep this morning with our entire livestock nestled on the bed (Cali and the two cats). It's when I have my most cohesive thoughts before I get upright and my brain falls out of my head.
We can draw a very very clear distinction tonight - if not Obama, then Gore. SOMEONE. Because as I said, this might be our final shot at getting a clear unfiltered voice out over the networks (FOX included). We need to make it count.
Let's see if I can put this simply.
John McCain definitely wants to give billions in tax cuts to corporations, especially big oil. He's convinced that their wealth will give them more money to hire more workers and create more jobs - the old trickle-down theory.
But that's not what they do. They instead hoard their profits so at the end of each quarter, they can tell their shareholders they made 9 billion or 11 billion dollars profit. Their stock skyrockets, they get a bigger infusion of cash, and the cycle continues.
What they do NOT do is hire new American workers. The tax cuts McCain wants to give them will only increase that profit by billions more a year.
They're not helping America. They're helping their stockholders. And too many Americans go paycheck-to-paycheck to survive.
Or worse. They lose their jobs. They lose their homes. They lose their kitchens, their tables and their chairs.
Our position should be not a penny in tax breaks unless they hire more American workers with those 9 billion, 11 billion dollars in profits. Tax breaks will be based on that criterion until our economy - OUR economy - recovers.
Wages should be living wages. Benefits should be mandatory. Education should be affordable for all. This is what laborers worked, struck and died for throughout our history, and we need to honor them.
Your company invests in American workers, and America will invest in your company. No handouts. No bailouts. No exceptions.
Socialistic? A trifle by definition, perhaps. But the complete abuse of capitalization in America has ruined everything we built and stood for. And don't forget, we suspended a lot more of our ideals in the "War on Terrorism."
Unlike that, however, this will be for the good of the commons. We're only as strong as our weakest link.
To coin an old phrase - there's got to be room at the top, because there's overcrowding here at the bottom.
(Hope that all came out right. I have to go pay for my home, kitchen, tables and chairs now.)
